Mushroom foraging rules in Switzerland

Check the rule that applies to the exact place

Swiss mushroom rules can differ by canton, municipality and protected area. A national summary is only a starting point. The current official source and signs at the location take precedence before every collection.

01

Canton, municipality and protected area are separate layers

A canton may set a general framework while a municipality applies an additional restriction. Nature reserves, plant protection areas and other protected sites can prohibit collection independently. Check all three levels for the exact woodland you plan to visit.

The absence of a special cantonal limit does not mean that collection is unrestricted everywhere. Temporary closures, private property, local access rules and signs on site can still affect what is allowed.

02

Closed periods, quantities and methods answer different questions

One rule may close specific calendar days, another may set a quantity per person and day, and another may restrict organised or commercial collection. Some places also regulate particular species or collection methods. These conditions should never be compressed into a simple statement that foraging is allowed.

When reading a cantonal summary, check its geographical scope, units, known municipal differences and review date. If two summaries conflict, follow the newer official publication and contact the responsible authority when necessary.

03

Inspection does not replace permission

A mushroom inspection service assesses the identity and condition of the specimens presented. It does not grant access, cancel a closed period or override a quantity limit. Conversely, collecting legally does not prove that a mushroom is correctly identified or suitable for consumption.

Keep species separate, retain complete specimens and check opening hours before visiting an inspection point. Cepello links to a dedicated page for each of the 26 cantons so that the relevant rule can be checked before a trip.
