Boletus reticulatus
The summer bolete, or summer cep, is Boletus reticulatus, with Boletus aestivalis as a synonym. It often fruits earlier than porcini in relatively warm broadleaf woodland, especially with oak. Late spring and summer are indicative windows, never guarantees.
Relatively warm broadleaf woodland, especially with oak, as well as beech and sweet chestnut.
Often early, from late spring through summer, with later fruiting possible when conditions allow.
Understand why the summer bolete can appear early
Boletus reticulatus is a mycorrhizal cep of broadleaf woodland, especially associated with oak in relatively warm stands. Its common name reflects fruiting that is often early and may begin in late spring.
Early does not mean regular. Brief rain on dry ground, cold nights or a windy slope can interrupt the window. Soil temperature, actual moisture and canopy condition need to be read together.
Use stem reticulation as a clue, not a single proof
The reticulated bolete name refers to a pale network that can extend over much of the stem. The cap may become dry or cracked, but these features change with development and conditions.
Pores, flesh, cut reaction, smell and habitat are also required. Bitter bolete is a classic confusion to exclude. For consumption, have the complete collection checked rather than relying on a photograph.
Identification and lookalikes
Bronze bolete, porcini, other ceps and bitter bolete can look similar. Extensive stem reticulation and a sometimes cracked cap are clues, not proof. The complete specimen needs inspection.
The map helps you search. Never identify.
Cepello does not identify mushrooms and never confirms that a specimen is edible. Have your entire collection checked by an official inspection service.
