No. A WSL study covering five Swiss plots from 1990 to 2007 found no relationship between lunar phase and visible mushroom abundance. Rain, soil moisture, temperature, species and habitat have much stronger evidence behind them.
What the Swiss researchers measured
The researchers analysed 1,715 weekly surveys from five plots. The inventories included mycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi, with precise dates that could be compared with the lunar cycle.
The study therefore relied neither on forager memories nor on a handful of selected trips. It used a standardised series covering eighteen years.
Full moon, waxing moon and time lags
No increase in mushrooms was detected around the full moon. Comparisons between waxing and waning phases found no effect either.
The dates were also shifted to account for development between fruiting initiation and observation. This analysis did not reveal a hidden relationship.
Why the myth can feel convincing
A productive trip is memorable, especially when it coincides with a visible full moon. Unsuccessful trips are less likely to be associated with a particular lunar phase.
Season, rainfall and temperature follow their own cycles. A coincidence in time can therefore look causal even when measurable ecological factors did the work.
Which signals are more useful
Compare accumulated rainfall, retained soil moisture, temperature, elevation and the habitat of the target species. None guarantees fruiting, but these factors have a measurable ecological basis.
