Why and how should your mushroom collection be inspected?

Prepare a basket for official inspection in Switzerland and understand why photographs are not enough.

Quick answer

The Swiss FSVO recommends having all collected mushrooms inspected before eating them. Bring the entire collection with complete specimens, separated by species and in good condition. Check the VAPKO directory for location, hours and conditions.

01

What inspection adds

An expert checks features a photograph may miss: the stem base, smell, texture, cut surfaces and condition. They remove toxic, inedible, spoiled or uncertain specimens and provide relevant preparation instructions.

02

Prepare an inspectable basket

Do not remove important features or wash specimens before inspection. Separate species, bring the entire collection and record the habitat. Check opening times because services may be seasonal or appointment only.

03

After inspection

Follow the decision exactly. Discard anything not cleared and do not add a specimen left at home. Inspection applies to the basket presented at that moment, not future finds or merely similar looking species.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a photograph enough for inspection?

No. Decisive features may be absent, damaged or impossible to assess in an image. Official inspection requires the physical specimens.

Should I bring only the doubtful mushrooms?

No. VAPKO recommends presenting the entire collection, separated by species.
